SUPREME COURT DIRECTS STATE GOVERNMENT TO ISSUE RATION CARDS TO UNORGANISED/MIGRANT WORKERS REGISTERED ON ESHRAM PORTAL Ministry of Labour and Employment had launched eShram Portal in 2021 for registration of unorganised/migrant labourers to provide them with Universal Account Number (UAN). The term unorganised/migrant worker has been defined under Unorganised Workers Social Security Act, 2008. The Ministry of Labour and Employment has facilitated Data Sharing Portal where the data in eShram portal is shared with State/UT so they can issue ration cards to these workers as it is found that more than 10 crore workers have been deprived of benefits and welfare schemes of Central and State government arising out of owning a ration card. There is PM- Kisan Samman Nidhi Scheme, Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Mann-Dhan Yojana and National Food Security Act which are beneficial to migrants registered under eShram Portal. The court stated that without ration cards these workers and their family members are not getting benefits of welfare schemes and thus directed State/UT to look after the unregistered migrants on Ration card data and issue their ration cards.
