The Ministry of Home Affairs on 08.04.2020 in press release intimates all the State Chief Secretaries to take essential measure ensuring the availability of essential goods by invoking Essential Commodities Act, 1955. The measures should include fixing of stock limits, capping of prices, enhancing production, inspection of accounts of dealers and such other actions as needed. Further the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution has authorized all the State and Union territories to notify orders under the Essential Commodities Act 1955, by relaxing the requirement of prior concurrence of the Central government upto 30.06.2020. The violation of abovementioned Act is a criminal offence for which punishment is imprisonment upto 7 year or fine or both.
